Rooftop Garden Winterizing
Branch Out collaborated with members of Boston University’s Center for English Language & Orientation Programs (CELOP) to volunteer with Higher Ground Farm on Saturday, Oct. 24. Higher Ground Farm is a well-established commercial rooftop garden center at the Boston Design Center in Fort Point, and sells some of the crops it grows to local restaurants. The rest is donated to food rescues like Lovin’ Spoonfuls, or sold directly to the community. The day's volunteers began winterizing the rooftop garden in the chilly morning hours, pulling arugula and mustard plants after the last harvest of the season. Volunteers discussed the farm’s sustainable rooftop gardening practices, including less-dense soil and rooftop water access, in the hopes of applying the ideas to future projects.
